Battery tests

Did you know that our SCAT can be used to test EV batteries? The following tests can be performed at the Fraunhofer-EMI SCAT:

  • Mechanical shock (400 kg at 50g): An acceleration trapezoidal pulse is applied to the Sled where the DUT is mounted. The Sled is pushed by the standard catapult and after finishing the it continues slowing down alone.
  • Acceleration and deceleration pulses (-30g): A user-defined acceleration & deceleration pulse is applied to the Sled where the DUT is mounted. The Sled remains coupled to the push-bar during the entire process.
  • Inertial impact (0.5 – 14 m/s): An Impactor of defined mass and shape is accelerated to a user-defined velocity and slides on rails until it hits and penetrates the DUT which is fixed (or can slide as well).
  • Motion-controlled intrusion (0.5 m/s): The Impactor, attached to the push-bar, intrudes in the DUT according to the user-defined position (or velocity) in front of the time curve (notice the curve must end at v = 0). Force measurement by means of force sensor located either at the push-bar end (with accelerometer in the Impactor to account for the Impactor mass inertial force) or behind the DUT.
  • Quasi-static compression (1 MN): A user-defined force is applied to the DUT through a guided shaped plate attached to the push-bar (pressure control or force control by means of an additional force sensor located either at the push-bar end or behind the DUT).
  • Free flight (25 m/s): An Impactor of defined mass and shape is accelerated to a user-defined velocity and free-flights until it hits and penetrates the DUT which is fixed. With other layouts, impact can be done vertically or at an angle.

Not only for reverse acceleration crash simulation, but also for many other tests: inertial impact, montion-controlled intrusion, quasi-static compression…
